The next-step retinol — for skin that's done graduating from beginner.
Alastin Renewal Retinol 0.5 is the advanced strength of Alastin's lipid-encapsulated retinol — clinically formulated for experienced retinol users who tolerate 0.25 nightly and want stronger smoothing of deeper lines, texture, and uneven tone. Same calming oat-and-ceramide barrier system, twice the active retinol.
Why people reach for it
Twice the retinol of the 0.25 formulation — for skin that's already comfortable with daily retinol use.
Targets visible signs of aging — fine and forming lines, rough texture, and uneven tone — with stronger renewal action.
Time-released technology means even at 0.5%, the formula stays more tolerable than most over-the-counter 0.5% retinols.
Oat extract, silver mushroom, niacinamide, and ceramide NP keep skin calm and hydrated through stronger renewal.
Who it's for
All skin types — best for current retinol users. Designed to address:
Why it works
Twice the active strength of the 0.25 formulation — time-released for the strongest tolerable smoothing and renewal.
Soothes and reduces visible irritation — keeps the skin comfortable as renewal accelerates.
Locks in hydration deeper than hyaluronic acid — counters the natural drying side of stronger retinol.
Reinforces the skin barrier and reduces redness — non-negotiable when stepping up to a 0.5% retinoid.
How to use it
- Confirm you tolerate 0.25 nightly without irritation
- Start 0.5 every other night for 2 weeks
- Apply 1 pump at night to dry skin only
- SPF 30+ every morning, no exceptions
- Use nightly once tolerated
- Buffer with moisturizer first if skin feels reactive
- Pause 3–5 nights before in-office laser, peel, or microneedling
- Pair with HA Immerse Serum to offset retinol-related dryness
Common questions
Am I ready for 0.5?
Yes if 0.25 has been comfortable nightly for at least 8–12 weeks with no peeling or persistent redness. No if you've recently started retinol, have active eczema or rosacea flares, or are using other strong actives daily.
Can I just skip 0.25 and start at 0.5?
We don't recommend it. Even encapsulated 0.5% retinol is more than most untrained skin can handle — you'll likely peel, flake, and stop using it before it can work. Start at 0.25 unless you've been using a similar-strength retinoid already.
How does this compare to a prescription tretinoin?
Prescription tretinoin (0.025%–0.1%) is a different molecule that's stronger and faster-acting. Renewal Retinol 0.5 is OTC retinol — generally better tolerated, slower to show results, but easier to stay consistent with.
Will I peel on the 0.5?
Some adjustment is normal when stepping up. The lipid encapsulation and barrier system minimize peeling compared to most 0.5% retinols, but a brief retinization period (1–3 weeks) is expected.
Is it pregnancy-safe?
No — retinol is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Pause use and check with your provider.
Do you ship, or can I pick up locally?
Both. Free shipping over $100 within the US, or pick up at our San Antonio location (20327 Interstate 10 Ste 140) — usually ready within 24 hours of ordering.
"0.5 is where the visible results pick up speed. By month three, most clients see real change in deeper lines and texture — and because the encapsulation keeps it tolerable, they actually stick with it long enough to see those results."
